Travelling from Stewart Island to Cape Reinga using only public transport
The Spinoff Daily, Monday November 4
Ahiahi mārie, welcome to The Spinoff Daily.
Today on The Spinoff: Checking in with New Zealanders in the United States; What is the Nelson Tenths case, and why is it important?; A collaborative guide to travelling with your parents
But first: In partnership with AA Insurance, it’s Travel Week on The Spinoff, and Joel MacManus is live-blogging his week-long endeavour to travel the length of the country using only public transport.
7.00am: The end of the road
This is, quite literally, where the road ends. Or should I say… begins?
I’m standing at 54 Thule Road. It is the most distant section of public road in New Zealand. I landed in Oban, Stewart Island at 6pm yesterday and immediately started walking until the road ran out.
9.50am: A review of the Foveaux Strait ferry
That boat should not exist. It is an affront to God, Poseidon, Neptune, and Tangaroa.
There are some places that Humans are simply not meant to go, and I believe Foveaux Strait is one of them.
2.22pm: Pork Pie Lane
We’re takin’ this bloody car bus to Invercargill, boy!
Joel will be live-blogging this near-impossible adventure all week, so tune in each day to see where in the world country he is.
