Ahiahi mārie, welcome to The Spinoff Daily.
Today on The Spinoff: What next after today’s round of media job losses? Plus, why a healthy environment should be a human right, and why Chris Warner has a beard now.
“Windowshopping Facebook Marketplace has become an entertaining pastime for me. There are always good deals and weird knick-knacks you wouldn’t find on its more responsible cousin, Trade Me.
I’ve seen a cat-shaped car, a roll of bondage tape sold by a woman who broke up with her boyfriend, and a hot pink CD and cassette player littered with cigarette butts for $1,000, but one listing has haunted me from the second I saw it: Natural hair all for $15.”
This could be the biggest loss of journalism jobs in New Zealand history. What’s next?

In 2023, Gary Stirling, circuit manager at the Pukekohe Park Raceway closed the gates for the last time. The raceway had hosted professional and community motorsports events for 60 years and is now being demolished to make room for horse racing facilities. “Time moves on, Puke’s gone,” he said.
Checkered Flag is a one-off documentary coming to The Spinoff on Tuesday 16th April. It follows Stirling and his daughter Natalie Stirling, the admin and cafe manager, in the months leading up to the last day ever at the racecourse. They register drivers, clean up after the Auckland floods, and say goodbye to what is so much more than a paddock with asphalt on it.
Checkered Flag is made with the support of NZ On Air.
