Ahiahi mārie, welcome to The Spinoff Daily.
Today on The Spinoff: Is Wellington City Council really dysfunctional, or is it just full of politicians? Plus: the community store that wants to change how you see rubbish, and a takedown of the godforsaken “Grimace Bus”.
“My student loan is one of the most shameful secrets of my life. For decades, I couldn’t talk about it. Sadly, that was probably when I most needed financial advice. Before I went to art school, my art teacher from high school told me to consider the student loan an investment in my future. Now it’s my past I look back on: all that distance travelled, when it seemed I was standing still, facing into the wind.
The number one regret of people on their death bed is spending too much time at work. I’m not there yet. My number one regret is my student loan.”
Episode four of Home Education introduces Kensey, who started slipping behind at school after repeated illness. Her mum Alesha remembers Kensey turning five and going to her first day of school as a huge milestone, but rather than let her fall behind, she dug deep and decided to do something out of their comfort zone. At the time however, all they knew of home schooling was what they had seen on Country Calendar. Now Kensey learns online and meets regularly with her local homeschool community. Their home education journey is just beginning: “we’ve just taken our jandal off at the edge of the river.” Made with the support of NZ On Air.
